Week 1 Notes

Defining Communication Technologies

Any process that transfers, transmits or makes information known to other people.

Intersubjectivity

"Chinese whispers" occurring in transfer of information. Communication between one person to another changes as the information is passed on.

Intertexuality

No message is ever complete. Any message gains a different meaning for the individual depending on their personal understanding of it. New Communication technologies accentuate this problem because they are 'interactive' leaving more room for own interpretation of information.

Marshal McLuhan

Marshal argues that technologies are extensions of the human body. e.g The tool is an extension of the hand, the wheel an extension of the leg and the book an extensi0n of the eye.
